2nd accident with RV due to tail swing (7/10/20 ) Blog post 93
Arrived at the Ponderosa Falls RV resort.
The instructions given on how to get to our site was given incorrectly. We went down the wrong lane. Now we are trying to figure out how to get around this narrow corner to go back the way we came to find our site. Turned down another wrong lane, blocking cars trying to get out. Backed RV back up and then got us going down another lane heading to our site. Still could not find it. Finally Neil went looking for it on foot. As he was coming back, a very nice older camp worker attempted to assist us. Then the park foreman came to help us. After about 10 minutes we were finally on the road where our site was located. The site was a backin site, and there was a road directly in front which meant all we had to do was make a right on to the road and back straight up. The older camp worker was trying to help by telling me which way to turn and when to start turning. I said there is tail swing and I need to pull more forward. He told me "no you are clear and fine." Instead of waiting for Neil, I listened to the worker and the next thing I hear is Neil yelling to stop! Sure enough my tail swing scraped the tree that I was concerned about. I was so upset with myself for not following my gut and waiting until Neil guided me. After that incident I pulled forward to get into position to back up. As I started backing up (being guided by Neil on walkie talkie) the camp worker, kept coming up to the truck telling me that "you are not doing it right, you have way too much room on the left side" I told him multiple times, "we got it, thank you!" but that would not stop him from continuing to instruct me to do it different. I said again "thank you, we got it, my husband is guiding me in". He shook his head, put his hands in the air, got back in his cart and finally left us alone.
This whole incident caused tension between Neil and myself, because all the issues, which upset me more than the incident.
The lesson learned that I take from this, is 1. Trust my gut- If I am concerned about Tail swing, it is probably because it exist. 2. Listen only to Neil- he has never let me down. 3. When anxiety is high- take a deep breath and don't take it out on each other.
After we were un-hooked, and I could actually look at the damage, I barely saw the scratches on the mold cap. We were fortunate.
There are scratches, but very hard to see in picture
This is the tree I hit, Neil said there is bark missing where I hit, but I can't tell.
